Frequently Asked Questions

I understand that you might still have a few questions before committing to a new project. Here you will find a compiled list of questions I am regularly asked.

If you still can't find the answers that you're looking for then please drop me a message using the short form at the bottom of the page and I will come back to you within 24 hours.

How much will a new website cost?

Every website I create is 100% bespoke and customised to your requirements. I do not use off the shelf templates. Because of this, it's difficult to put an exact price on the cost of a website without a discussion, however you can expect a starting point for a basic responsive website to be around £799.99. For more information you can contact me and I can create a custom, no obligation proposal for you.

Other costs to consider when thinking about a new website are hosting fees, the cost of buying a domain name (along with its ongoing renewal), future support requirements and search engine / social media marketing. If you find yourself confused with what you need, get in touch, and I'll help to make things clearer.

Can you build me a WordPress site?

No. I do not use site builders, such as WordPress, to create websites. All my websites are designed and created from a blank canvas with a strong focus on user experience and speed. Experience has taught me that WordPress is not the best way to build a professional website. If however, you're insistent on using the blogging software to build your site I can put you in touch with someone who can help.

How long will it take to create my new website?

As each website is unique it's difficult to give a definitive answer. When I put together your customised proposal document I will give you a timescale based on what you have said you want from the project. Typically, a basic site will take 1-2 weeks, however a more complex size might take up to 3 months.

Can I update my website myself?

Absolutely. If you ask me to include my in-house Content Management system you are free to login and make changes as and when you need to. My CMS was built with the help and direction of website owners, so it's super easy to use. If you decide not to add the content management system to your order you will need to contact me (or another web designer) to make your changes.

I want to sell products and take real time card payments. Is this possible?

Yes! I can build you an ecommerce store that gives you the facility to add / remove / update products, manage orders, view order history and manage your customers. My payment gateway of choice is Stripe (check them out here) although I can integrate any payment system that you prefer to use.

What is hosting and why do I need this?

Just as a high street shop needs a premises, so does your website or online application. A website needs to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, so it needs a server that is constantly powered on and connected to the internet. The server needs to ensure that the customer experience of your website is fast, and it can cope with a high volume of users. My hosting platform is up to task of serving the most demanding sites, is protected from malicious attacks and for complete peace of mind I operate a strict nightly backup routine, with a copy of all sites stored on a remote server.

Do I own my website when it's finished?

Yes you do. Unlike many of the 'free' website builder products out there, when finished, the website is licensed to you to use perpetually. You are not permitted to resell your website as a product unless specifically agreed in the contract.

Can you update my website for me when it's finished?

Yes. I understand that you are busy running your business, and sometimes it's difficult to find the time to keep your website up to date. I offer a number of ongoing support options such as Pay as you go or monthly retainers.

Can you guarantee me top spot on Google?

Unfortunately, no. It's impossible to guarantee a specific spot in the search engines. Rankings are based on a number of factors, so it's really down to the time and effort that is put into the optimisation of your site. What I can guarantee is my best ongoing efforts to drive real visitors to your website.

I'm not based in Brighton. Can you still help me?

Absolutely, yes. In fact 90% of my clients are based outside Brighton, with the majority actually being outside the U.K. Most of my work is carried out remotely via email, with the occasional FaceTime or Zoom meeting thrown in for peace of mind. What I can guarantee is consistent contact with you during the life of the project.

I'm a registered charity. Do you offer discounts?

I do! You will need to provide documentation to prove that the charity is registered and legitimate, and once done we can discuss your requirements and how I can help.

Can you manage my Social Media accounts?

No, sorry. I'm not a big fan of social media, so I can't help you with that.

I'm worried about privacy and GDPR. Can you help?

Yes! I can build you a fully compliant site, that respects the wishes of it's visitors when it comes to Cookies and GDPR. Recently I've come across a number of sites that, despite asking if you agree to Cookies have already gone ahead and slapped a Google Analytics (and others) tracking cookie onto your device. This is illegal. I can guarantee that any website I create will be compliant with the law.
